Installing Cultured Stone on Cinder Block — What You Need to Know

Cultured stone — also called manufactured stone veneer — is one of those upgrades that genuinely transforms the look of a house. That two-foot band below the siding goes from plain grouted cinder block to something that looks like it's been there since the house was built. Around 160 square feet is a common run for that kind of foundation or knee wall treatment, and it's absolutely within reach for a motivated homeowner.

But before you order stone and start mixing mortar, there are a few questions that need real answers: Do you need wire lath? A scratch coat? What kind of mortar, and how much can you mix at once without it setting up on you in an Arkansas summer? I've done enough of this work in the Twin Lakes area to give you straight answers on all of it.

Wire Lath — Do You Need It?

Short answer: no, not on cinder block.

Wire lath — that diamond-pattern metal mesh you staple to walls — exists because wood-framed walls need something for mortar to key into mechanically. OSB and plywood don't bond to mortar on their own, so you embed lath in a scratch coat and use that as your base. Without lath, the mortar has nothing to hold onto and the whole thing eventually pops off the wall.

Masonry is different. Cinder block and concrete are already porous and rough enough to bond directly to mortar — provided the surface is clean and in good shape. Cultured Stone's own installation documentation confirms it: on unit masonry, you skip the lath and apply mortar directly to the block. That eliminates several steps and a significant chunk of material cost.

The catch is that word "provided." If the block surface is painted, sealed, dirty, or too smooth, you've got a problem. Grouted block that was troweled smooth falls into that category. Which is where the scratch coat comes in.

The Scratch Coat — Yes, You Need One

If your cinder block has been grouted — especially if it was finished smooth or if you're not sure about the surface texture — do the scratch coat. It takes one extra day and a few bags of mortar, and it's the difference between stone that stays on the wall for 30 years and stone that starts popping off in 5.

What the scratch coat does is simple: you apply a 3/8" to 1/2" layer of Type S mortar over the entire surface, then drag a notched trowel across it horizontally while it's still firm but not hard. Those ridges give the setting mortar mechanical grip. You're basically resetting the bonding surface to your spec instead of trusting whatever finish is on the existing grout.

Before the scratch coat goes on, brush or roll a concrete bonding agent (Quikrete makes a good one, available at any lumber yard around here) over the whole surface and let it tack up — about 15 to 30 minutes. It should feel sticky like contact cement. That's your primer layer. The scratch coat goes on over that.

Score it horizontally, let it cure 24 to 48 hours, and you're ready to set stone. In summer heat, mist the scratch coat every few hours while it cures — mortar cures by a chemical reaction, not just by drying, and if it dries too fast in the heat it loses strength.

Mortar: What Kind and How Much

Use Type S masonry mortar. That's the standard for exterior stone veneer — it has the compressive strength and flex to handle outdoor conditions, including the freeze-thaw cycles we get here in Baxter County. You can buy it pre-bagged at any building supply store. Don't overthink the product; a 60-pound bag of pre-blended Type S is what most installers use.

For 160 square feet, budget roughly 10 to 12 bags total — about 4 for the scratch coat and 6 to 8 for setting the stone. That's a rough estimate that accounts for normal waste and coverage variation by stone thickness.

Mixing in a Bucket — The Batch Size Question

Yes, a 5-gallon bucket and a drill with a jiffy mixer paddle is exactly the right setup for a job this size. A corded drill is better than battery for sustained mixing — you'll be doing a lot of short batches back to back and you don't want to stop and swap batteries.

Here's where people get into trouble: they mix too much at once and then race the clock. In Mountain Home in the summer, Type S mortar gives you roughly 20 to 25 minutes of good working time before it starts to stiffen. Once it starts going, it goes fast. If you've got 30 lbs of mortar in a bucket and you're still 20 minutes from using all of it, you're about to throw away half a batch — or worse, put stiff mortar on the wall where it won't bond properly.

The fix is simple: mix about a third of a bag at a time. That's roughly 20 lbs of dry mix, which will cover 8 to 10 square feet of setting. At a normal working pace, you'll use it in 15 to 20 minutes, mix another batch, and keep a steady rhythm going without any pressure to rush.

A few more things that help in the heat:

  • Work early. Start at first light. Mortar and Arkansas afternoons in July are a bad combination.
  • Keep the bucket in the shade. Direct sun on your mortar bucket speeds up setup noticeably.
  • Mist the wall and the back of each stone before setting. Hot, dry masonry sucks moisture right out of the mortar before it can bond. Pre-wetting slows that down.
  • Don't re-temper repeatedly. If the mortar stiffens up, you can add a small amount of water and remix once. If it's already started its chemical set — usually you can tell because it stops responding to remixing — cut your losses and mix fresh. Adding water to setting mortar weakens the final bond.

Setting the Stone

For dry-stacked cultured stone — which means tight joints with no visible mortar between pieces — the process is straightforward once your scratch coat is cured.

Work from the bottom up. This is the rule. Mortar drips, and you want it dropping on unfinished wall, not on stone you already set. Apply about 3/4" of mortar to the back of each stone — full coverage, no bare spots — press it firmly against the scratch coat with a slight twist, and you should see a thin bead of mortar squeeze out around the edges. That squeeze-out is confirmation you've got good contact. Wipe it off immediately with a damp brush before it skins over.

Pull a stone off every 10 or 15 and check the back. You want 90% or better coverage. If you're seeing bare spots or the mortar is just on the edges, you're either not putting enough on or the wall is drying it out too fast. Adjust accordingly.

Corners go first if you have any — they set the lines for everything else. Mix stone from multiple boxes. Manufacturers batch color, and pulling from only one box gives you blotchy results across the wall.

The Siding Transition — Don't Skip This

Where the stone terminates at the top and meets your siding is the most important detail on the whole job, and it's the one most people don't think about until it's too late.

You need metal flashing — Z-flashing or a drip edge — installed at that top edge before you set the stone. It tucks under the bottom of the siding and creates a positive water break. The stone should terminate underneath that flashing, not just butt up against the siding. Once the stone is set and cured, caulk the joint where the flashing meets the siding with a paintable, flexible masonry caulk.

Skip this step and you're giving water a direct path behind the stone and into whatever's under your siding. That's a rot problem waiting to happen. Take the extra hour, do it right.

The Short Version

No lath needed on cinder block. Do the scratch coat — it's worth it. Type S mortar, third-of-a-bag batches, work in the shade and early in the day. Bottom to top on the stone, squeeze-out is your friend, and don't forget the flashing at the top. Handle those five things correctly and the job will look good and stay put.
